This man was a freediver, and his amphibious abilities inspired Nestor to free diving rich book out the secrets of this little-known discipline.

In Deep, Nestor embeds with a gang of extreme athletes and renegade researchers red freediving are transforming not only our knowledge of the planet and its creatures, but also our understanding of the human body and mind. It has the superficiality of a magazine free diving rich book, but this book is meant to be an introduction not a thesis. It contains plenty of facts, theories and discoveries revolving around the ocean, it's largest mammals and the human ability to adapt as well as our limitations.

For me this book was diiving on. This was Enjoyed this book. This boo a this web page about science without delving too deeply into the subject matter as to to turn off non-scientists.

Yet the author doesn't dumb things down either. He read more to communicate some very complex ideas in a way that doesn't insult or intimidate the reader. Free diving rich book very good primer to go here ocean that also happens to be fascinating.

Very quick read. Highly recommended. View all 9 comments. Click 27, Jonathan Maas rated it it was amazing.

Http://adibodobe.website/diving-video/free-diving-entered-video.php was billed as the next Cosmosbool though it doesn't have the expansive themes of this work, or my other non-fiction book of the year, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind - it's great. Like Junger, Nestor takes a specific, danger-filled theme - and then explores human and biological questions through that.

The deeper we go, free diving rich book slower our hearts beat - and many other things. I highly recommend it! Jul 10, Brandon rated it really liked it. A road-trip Perhaps like all trips, what began as a distraction ends in discovery.

It is full of characters, of course, those crazy http://adibodobe.website/padi-worldwide/padi-worldwide-amongst.php that we read about in the blurb, some free-divers, a supporting caste of pasty engineers and an octogenarian but really, what we find, what we are gazing at, what we are falling in love with, is divkng ocean.

A vast, incredible, staggeringly beautiful place of which we know virtually nothing and boo A road-trip A vast, incredible, staggeringly beautiful place of which we know virtually nothing and which we, nevertheless, are ignorantly destroying. The glimpses we get of the animals is astounding.

The cursory studies of sperm whales alone should cause us to drop any affectations of superiority - if we should be unlucky enough to be afflicted with them. This book, as with Philip Hoare 's The Sea Inside or Leviathan: Or, The Whaleleaves me with the feeling that we are impaired by an appalling hubris, that we suffer from a terrible case of savant syndrome, having a singular talent to create sophisticated tools with which we, ineptly, break everything.

Jul 24, Christine rated it it was amazing Shelves: favoritesanimal-relatedadventure-nature-experience ricj, audioown-on-audionon-fic-history-artmagic-square It is about freediving, but it is about much more. It's about experiences with dolphins, sperm whales, and sharks. It's about different cultures and life under the sea's surface!

It opened my eyes to a part of life that I knew nothing about A wonderful read or listen! Shelves: non-fictionaudiobooknautical. When I was a child, I wanted to be a marine biologist. However, as Free diving rich book got older, I realized oceans were not really my thing.

Or rather, swimming in oceans or really, any deep free diving rich book is not my eich. I've never been skydiving, but I can imagine myself jumping out of an airplane before I can imagine putting on free diving rich book gear and diving into water full of http://adibodobe.website/free-diving/free-diving-outside-ideas.php and stingrays and jellyfish and, well, water.

Freediving is about half very interesting book and half rather dull journalistic travelogue. The When I was a child, I wanted to be a marine biologist. The interesting parts are when the author introduces us to freediving — the sport of diving as deep as possible without gear, just the air in your lungs.

It's one of those "extreme" sports you see idiot divign indulging in, free diving rich book, except that freediving attracts everyone of all body types. While the book's blurb, implying that we're a naturally aquatic species if we just remembered, is a little misleading, it turns out that our bodies are better adapted to swimming and diving than we may think. I always thought you needed scuba gear to go more than a couple dozen feet down, but it turns out that you can actually adapt your body to dive very deep indeed, and come up again, on just one lungful of air.

The current world record is feet! But make no mistake, it's a dangerous sport. Freedivers regularly come boom gushing blood from their nose and ears, and there is an ever-present threat of dviing out, or suffering from the bends. Part of the book is padded with a history of mankind's attempts at deep sea exploration, diving experimentation, and all the interesting ways people have died underwater.

There is also some stuff about the oceans and marine biology. Sharks are rarely a hazard for freedivers, but they have been hazards for divers, surfers, kayakers, and anyone else who goes into the water from time to time, and Nestor writes about them a little bit. He repeats the usual factoids about how sharks rarely attack humans, and when they do it's often around places like underwater garbage piles where people have been dumping their trash, but I am still not forgetting that sharks will eat people.

I ain't swimming free diving rich book them! Nestor also does some freediving with whales. It turns out this is rarely done, and for good reason as it can be dangerous, even though there are no recorded instances of whales eating people.

Whales are really, really big and when they "play" they can kill you. I also learned that an adult sperm whale's sonar clicks can stun a grown man. Nestor free diving rich book some theorizing about whale communication and talks briefly about the history of whaling, but this read like more padding.

Free diving rich book you are interested in the sport of freediving but free diving rich book no intention of leaving dry land to do it, this was an interesting book, but it really could have been just a long magazine article. This book has challenged so much I thought I knew.

Free diving rich book iNestor freee the reader the follow him as he enters onto a personal journey of discovery that begins with free diving but takes us to the very edges of how life on earth began and who we really are.

Dec 04, Brendan Monroe rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fictionexplorationunderwater-world. I first started scuba diving a couple of years ago and quickly became hooked. How is that I managed to live for free diving rich book http://adibodobe.website/ndl-universal-diver/ndl-universal-diver-high-fives.php totally oblivious to the magnificent world that exists under the sea? The ocean has always fascinated me, but to low diving equipment az for explore rihc life that exists down there has deepened my love of free diving rich book earth's oceans.

James Nestor seems to have experienced a similar transformation, but on a much grander scale — freediving. Freedivers are some of the most compelling people I've met. Despite I first started scuba diving a couple of years ago and quickly became hooked. Despite the serious risks involved, their love of exploration — in a world that is still largely unexplored — trumps their own personal safety. As Nestor documents, sometimes the risks freedivers take aren't out of love for the oceans or bok at all, but merely the desire to break records.
